What are macular holes and puckers?

Your macula is the central portion of tissue in the retina. A macular hole is a full thickness defect  that occurs within the macula and causes central vision loss. Macular holes most commonly occur in patients above 55 and area associated with age related changes such as vitreous separation. Unfortunately no preventative measures exist and certain factors such as myopia or macular hole in the other eye can lead to a higher risk of a macular hole. Treatment for macular holes is surgery. Vitrectomy surgery has an over 90% success rate in treating the macular hole.
