Macular Degeneration Q & A

What is macular degeneration?

Age related macular degeneration(AMD) is a common condition in older adults affecting the center of the retina, known as the macula. It can lead to visual distortions, blind spots, and central vision loss. There are 2 general forms of AMD known as dry and wet. Dry AMD typically causes slow visual changes but eventually in some cases can lead to severe vision loss. Wet AMD is defined by the presence of abnormal blood vessels that form under the retina and cause bleeding and leakage and ultimately vision loss if not treated promptly. Typically AMD is treated with injections of medications to the white part of the eye in a painless fashion. Most patients need repeat injections to prevent the complications of the disease.
